Often overlooked in favor of the vibrant fun of Tel Aviv or the history of Jerusalem, the Negev Desert is Israel’s southern crown jewel. Exceptionally beautiful, and renowned for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, the Negev is an absolute treasure trove of adventures for every type of traveler.

Natural Wonders of the Negev: Timna Park and Ramon Crater

The Negev Desert, covering over half of Israel, is a true kaleidoscope of colors and terrains.

Two of the most popular things to do in the Negev, Timna Park and the Ramon Crater are truly unmissable natural wonders.

Timna Park

Nestled approximately 20 miles north of Eilat, Timna Park is a stunning testament to the Negev Desert's natural beauty and historical richness.

This valley, famous for its extensive copper ore mining from ancient times, is home to interestingly wind-shaped rocks and a stunning desert landscape. Among its most iconic features are Solomon’s Pillars, which are a set of huge, naturally-formed sandstone columns that have withstood the tests of time and the harsh desert landscape.

The park is so much more than just a stunning place to get lost in; it's also a window into the past world of ancient mining techniques and the people who lived and worked in this harsh yet beautiful environment. Today, Timna Park is a popular destination for hikers, photographers, and adventurers, with its fascinating blend of history and natural wonders.

Ramon Crater

The Ramon Crater, or the “Makhtesh Ramon”, is another jewel in the Negev Desert's crown.

Often mistaken as a meteor impact site, this immense crater is actually a unique geological formation known as a “makhtesh”. Found only in Israel's Negev Desert and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, these geological formations are only found in the Middle East.

The Ramon Crater is both the largest makhtesh in the world and also the centerpiece of Israel's largest national park, the Ramon Nature Reserve. If you visit the reserve, you can learn all about the makhtesh’s diverse flora and fauna through the interactive exhibits at the Mitzpe Ramon Visitor Center. You’ll also learn about how the makhtesh formed, as well as get an introduction to the natural history of this stunning corner of the world.

The Negev Desert is a place that naturally attracts adventurers and explorers! Here are just a few other exciting activities you might want to try out:

  • For the adventurous soul, the Negev offers endless hiking trails and off-roading experiences. It's best to look up the hiking trails you're most interested in and then check out their opening hours: for example, some may be closed in the winter months.
  • Explore Ein Avdat's canyons or embark on a thrilling jeep tour across the desert.
  • Discover ancient history at the UNESCO-listed Tel Be’er Sheva.
  • Experience Israel’s modern history and see the house where the country’s first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion, lived at Kibbutz Sde Boker. His grave - a stunning area surrounded by mountains - is also a jaw-dropping area of natural beauty, and a perfect place for some quiet reflectio
